In accordance with the action plan proposed in the Farm to Plate Strategy, the European Commission intends to submit by the end of 2022 a project concerning harmonized, mandatory nutritional labelling on the front of food packaging. as well as the establishment of nutrient profiles aimed at limiting the use of claims to foods with an “adequate” nutritional profile.

Initially, the Commission asked EFSA to provide with scientific advice on the following points :

  • Nutrients important for the public health of European populations, including components which are not nutrients in food (e.g. energy, dietary fiber).
  • Food groups which play an important role in the diets of European populations and their subgroups.
  • Criteria to guide the selection of nutrients and other non-nutrient components of foods for profiling.

The EFSA will have to deliver its opinion by the end of March 2022. Following this opinion, a public consultation will take place by the end of the year.
