It is present in salmon, krill, shrimp, microalgae such as Haematococcus pluvialis. Considered a novel food, the astaxanthin-rich oleoresin extracted from the algae Haematococcus pluvialis is on the European Union&#8217;s list of novel foods. Its use must comply with the conditions of the authorisation set out in <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32017R2470\">R\u00e8glement d\u2019ex\u00e9cution (UE) 2017\/2470 du 20 d\u00e9cembre 2017<\/a>: use in <strong>food supplements<\/strong>, the maximum daily doses of <strong>astaxanthin<\/strong> to not exceed, the labelling statements and the designation.<br \/>\n<strong>To know more case study and blog:<\/strong> link <a href=\"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/us_client\/naxa-natural-algae-astaxanthin-association\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">case study<\/a>, blog <a href=\"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/2020\/02\/26\/securite-de-lastaxanthine-pour-son-utilisation-en-tant-que-novel-food-dans-les-complements-alimentaires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">astaxanthin<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_c\" class=\"letter\">C<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Claim: <\/strong>According to the Regulation <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32006R1924\">EU 1924\/2006<\/a>, \u2018claim\u2019 means any message or representation, which is not mandatory under Community or national legislation, including pictorial, graphic or symbolic representation, in any form, which states, suggests or implies that a food has particular characteristics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_d\" class=\"letter\">D<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Directorate-General for Food (DGAL):<\/strong> Within the Ministry of agriculture and of Food Sovereignty, the Directorate-General for Food (Direction G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l \u2019Alimentation, DGAL) ensures food safety and quality at every level of the food chain, as well as the health and protection of animals and plants, in coordination with the State services in the regions and departments and with the various stakeholders concerned: professionals from the agricultural world, associations, consumers, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF):<\/strong> Within the Ministry of the Economy, the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer affairs and Fraud Control (Direction G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de la concurrence, de la consummation et de la repression des frauds, DGCCRF) ensures the proper functioning of markets, for the benefit of consumers and businesses.<br \/>\n<strong>The DGCCRF acts in favour of:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; compliance with competition rules;<br \/>\n&#8211; economic consumer protection;<br \/>\n&#8211; the safety and compliance of products and services.<br \/>\nAs the supervisory authority, it intervenes:-<br \/>\n&#8211; on all areas of consumption (food and non-food products, services);<br \/>\n&#8211; at all stages of the economic activity (production, transformation, importation , and distribution)<br \/>\n&#8211; regardless of the form of commerce: stores, e-commerce sites or sites related to the sharing economy, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_e\" class=\"letter\">E<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>EFSA: European Food Safety Authority<\/strong> The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) provides independent scientific advice on food- related risks. This advice informs European laws, rules and policymaking. The <strong>EFSA<\/strong> established according to the European Regulation178\/2002 helps protect consumers from existing and emerging food related risks in the food chain from the field to the table.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_f\" class=\"letter\">F<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Food for special medical purpose (FSMP):<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:32013R0609\">Food for special medical purposes*<\/a> means food specially processed or formulated and intended for the dietary management of patients, including infants, to be used under medical supervision; it is intended for the exclusive or partial feeding of patients with a limited, impaired or disturbed capacity to take, digest, absorb, metabolise or excrete ordinary food or certain nutrients contained therein, or metabolites, or with other medically-determined nutrient requirements, whose dietary management cannot be achieved by modification of the normal diet alone.<br \/>\nFood for special medical purposes may only be placed on the European market if it complies with the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32016R0128\">Commission Delegated Regulation EU 2016\/128<\/a> regarding their specific compositional and information requirements. Before placing the <strong>FSMP<\/strong> on the market, the <strong>FSMP<\/strong> shall be notified to the competent authority of each Member State where the product will be launched. Notification includes a model of the label used for the product as well as any information showing the compliance with e the Regulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Food supplements:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:32002L0046\">Food supplements<\/a> means foodstuffs the purpose of which is to supplement the normal diet and which are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, alone or in combination, marketed in dose form, namely forms such as capsules, pastilles, tablets, pills and other similar forms, sachets of powder, ampoules of liquids, drop dispensing bottles, and other similar forms of liquids and powders designed to be taken in measured small unit quantities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_h\" class=\"letter\">H<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Health claim:<\/strong> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32006R1924&quot;\">Regulation EU 1924\/2006<\/a>, <i>\u2018health claim\u2019<\/i> means any claim that states, suggests or implies that a relationship exists between a food category, a food or one of its constituents and health. There are different types of<strong> health claims<\/strong>: the \u2018general function\u2019 claims, the claims related to child growth or development, and those related to disease risk factor reduction.<br \/>\nIn order to be used, a <strong>health claim<\/strong> must first be authorized. The available EU register of health claims allows to search health claims authorized and non-authorized throughout the European countries. To be authorized, a health claim must undergo a scientific evaluation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EFSA<\/strong><\/a> on the basis of a dossier submitted by the applicant.<br \/>\nTo know more client case: (regulation files)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_n\" class=\"letter\">N<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Nutrition claim:<\/strong> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32006R1924\">Regulation EU 1924\/2006<\/a>, <em>\u2018nutrition claim\u2019<\/em> means any claim which states, suggests or implies that a food has particular beneficial nutritional properties due to: (a) the energy (calorific value) it (i) provides, (ii) provides at a reduced or increased rate, or (iii) does not provide; and\/or (b) the nutrients or other substances it (i) contains, (ii) contains in reduced or increased proportions, or (iii) does not contain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Notification of food supplements in EU:<\/strong> EU countries may, for monitoring purposes, request notification to their competent authority of the placing on the market in their territory of a food supplement product by forwarding a model of the label used for the product in accordance with Article 10 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:32002L0046\">directive 2002\/46<\/a>.<br \/>\nAccording to the principle of mutual recognition, Member States shall not, for reasons related to their composition, manufacturing specifications, presentation or labelling, prohibit or restrict trade of food supplements lawfully commercialized in another member State.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Notification \/ Marketing of food supplements in France: <\/strong> To be able to be marketed on the French market, a food supplement must be the subject of a declaration to the competent authority, the <strong>Directorate General of Food<\/strong> since February 3, 2023, by means of the dedicated teleservice: <a href=\"https:\/\/teleicare.dgccrf.finances.gouv.fr\/Connexion\/PageConnexion?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1\">T\u00e9l\u00e9icare<\/a> in accordance with the requirements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/loda\/id\/JORFTEXT000000638341\/2021-01-04\/\">decree no. 2006-352<\/a> relating to food supplements.<br \/>\nThis declaration meets the requirements of Articles 15 and 16 of Decree No. 2006-352. Depending on the nature of the substances present in the food supplement, two distinct procedures are possible:<br \/>\n&#8211; if the substances used in the composition of food supplements comply with national provisions, then the declaration is made according to the procedure of Article 15, a \u201cdeclaration certificate\u201d is issued. This certificate does not constitute a guarantee of conformity with the provisions in force, nor a marketing authorization.<br \/>\n&#8211; on the other hand, if substances not meeting national requirements are used and the food supplements in question are legally manufactured or marketed in another Member State or in another State party to the agreement on the European Economic Area, we then resort to the prior authorization procedure according to the principle of mutual recognition according to article 16.<br \/>\nAny declaration must include a legible copy of the labeling with the text in French, complying with regulatory requirements and including warning notices specific to certain constituents.<br \/>\n<strong>To know more:<\/strong><br \/>\n-Recommendations from the DGAL for notifying food supplements in France<br \/>\n-Transfer of competence from the <strong>DGCCRF<\/strong> to the<strong> DGAL<\/strong>: what changes for food supplements<br \/>\n-Our services<br \/>\n-You can contact us if you wish to declare a food product on the French market<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Novel Food<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:32015R2283\"><i>Novel Food<\/i><\/a> is defined as food that had not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997, when the first Regulation on novel food came into force. In addition, <strong>Novel Food<\/strong> has to fall under at least one of the categories defined by the European Regulation on Novel Food 2015\/2283.<br \/>\nNovel Food can be newly developed, innovative food, food produced using new technologies and production processes, as well as food which is or has been traditionally eaten outside of the EU. Food used exclusively in food supplements within the Union before 15 May 1997, where it is intended to be used in foods other than food supplements is considered as a <strong>Novel Food<\/strong>.<br \/>\nPre-market authorisation of Novel Foods is mandatory on the basis of a safety evaluation by the <a href=\"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/lexique\/#letter_e\">EFSA<\/a>. The applicant submits a file <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/4590\">complying with the requirements of EFSA<\/a> and containing data on the composition, nutritional, toxicological and allergenic properties as well as production process, proposed uses and use levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_o\">O<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>\u00ab One Health \u00bb ou \u00ab sant\u00e9 (globale) unique \u00bb en fran\u00e7ais :<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/one-health#tab=tab_1\">According to the WHO<\/a>, <em>One Health<\/em> is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably bal-ance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems.<br \/>\nIt recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environ-ment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"set\">\n<h3 id=\"letter_p\">P<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"word\">\n<li><strong>Postbiotic: <\/strong> A preparation of inanimate microorganisms and\/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host.<br \/>\n<strong>To know more:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211;
