This study was performed in 2018 by the French organism of consumption, CREDOC, for FranceAgriMer and OCHA (French dairy inter-branch organization Observatory of food habits). In France as in Spain, Germany and UK, the 4 countries investigated, the meat global consumption is decreasing since 10 years, with trend towards the stabilisation recently. This can be explained by urbanization in society or media debate regarding man-nature relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is shown in the quantitative study that <strong>5.6&nbsp;% of the\ninterviewed subjects (weighted average in the 4 countries) say they are\nvegetarians or vegans<\/strong>, with the most veggies\/vegans in UK (8&nbsp;%) and\nthe less in Spain (2.8&nbsp;%). This figure may seem low, however, meat\nconsumption, and particularly red meat, tendency to decrease is also due to <strong>flexitarians\nwho are 20 to 25&nbsp;% among respondents<\/strong>. These subjects choose to limit\ntheir meat consumption for other than financial reasons, without becoming fully\nvegetarian. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivations for meat reduction or non-consumption are also described in\nthe study: <strong>health<\/strong> is the main reason for meat reduction and <strong>ethical\nreasons<\/strong> as animal rights are named by those who choose eviction. These\ndiets involve firstly women, young people under 35, urban population or with\nstrong cultural capital. Flexitarism is an answer to different motivations as <strong>\u201cconsume\nless but better\u201d<\/strong>. This study highlights the difficulty to quantify this\nphenomenon that is still marginal.
