{"id":7169,"date":"2020-07-31T15:54:24","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T14:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/?p=7169"},"modified":"2020-07-31T15:57:54","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T14:57:54","slug":"la-plupart-des-consommateurs-europeens-souvrent-une-alimentation-plus-durable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/en\/2020\/07\/31\/la-plupart-des-consommateurs-europeens-souvrent-une-alimentation-plus-durable\/","title":{"rendered":"Most EU consumers open to eat more sustainably"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"l-subsection\"><div class=\"l-subsection-h\"><div class=\"l-subsection-hh g-html i-cf\">The <strong>BEUC<\/strong> (the european consumers organisation) conducted a survey simultaneously across 11 EU countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain) throughout October and November 2019, some months before the COVID-19 outbreak to investigate consumer attitudes towards sustainable foods. It was shown some encouraging trends regarding consumer willingness to adopt more sustainable food habits but the survey also highlights important barriers to change that need to be addressed to support sustainable food choices by consumers. \u00a0The main findings are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consumers tend to <strong>underestimate the impact of their\u202fown\u202ffood habits on the environment<\/strong>, but <strong>most are aware of the environmental impact of food habits in general.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Two thirds of consumers are open to changing their eating habits\u202ffor\u202fthe environment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Overall, concerning food, <strong>consumers primarily see \u2018sustainable\u2019 as a synonym for environmentally friendly, without GMOs and pesticides, and local, with some specificities across countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Price,\u202flack of knowledge, unclear information,\u202fand\u202flimited\u202fchoice\u202fof sustainable options<\/strong>\u202fare what most consumers say prevent them from eating more sustainably.<\/li>\n<li>Just <strong>over 40% of consumers say they have either stopped eating red meat or have cut down due to environmental concerns<\/strong>.
