Orchidali summarizes and comments the issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In recent months<\/strong> the Nutri-score (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.senat.fr\/questions\/base\/2021\/qSEQ210422090.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the use of which is increasing<\/a>) has been the subject of much talk, either through heated press conferences (as those by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roquefort.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Communique%CC%81-de-presse-Roquefort-sans-Nutriscore.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration G\u00e9n\u00e9rale des Producteurs de Lait de Brebis et des Industriels de Roquefort<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/irqualim.fr\/lirqualim-et-ses-membres-mobilises-contre-linadaptation-du-nutri-score-pour-les-produits-de-terroir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Institut R\u00e9gional de la Qualit\u00e9 Agroalimentaire d&#8217;Occitanie<\/em><\/a>) or across several parliamentary questions, published in French official journals accompanied by the relative answers from the institutions, the latest of which is dated October 14, 2021 (<em>Questions \u00e9crites<\/em> n\u00b0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.senat.fr\/questions\/base\/2021\/qSEQ210422090.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">22090<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senat.fr\/questions\/base\/2021\/qSEQ210824157.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24157<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senat.fr\/questions\/base\/2021\/qSEQ210824188.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24188<\/a>, et <a href=\"https:\/\/questions.assemblee-nationale.fr\/q15\/15-39219QE.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">39219<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"J0lOec\">\n<p>Let us remind that the Nutri-score is one of the tools to express and summarize, on the front of food packages, the nutritional declaration, providing an indication of the nutritional quality of a food.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions take place against <strong>the background <\/strong>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/system\/files\/2020-05\/f2f_action-plan_2020_strategy-info_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Farm to Fork Strategy<\/a> that, adopted by the European Commission in 2020 with the aim of boosting the economy while improving health and quality of life, has scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022 a proposal for a (mandatory) front-of-pack labeling solution to summarize nutritional information in a harmonized manner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.senat.fr\/questions\/base\/2021\/qSEQ210422090.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France hopes that the chosen method will be the Nutri-score<\/a>, which is used on the national territory, on a voluntary basis, since 2017; besides, the system is the most widespread one among EU countries, as was shown by a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/system\/files\/2020-05\/labelling-nutrition_fop-report-2020-207_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> on the topic contemplated by Article 35 of Reg (UE) 1169\/2011 and published in May 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The debate<\/strong> revolves around the fact that many traditional products such as numerous cheeses, some of which were even granted <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/food-farming-fisheries\/food-safety-and-quality\/certification\/quality-labels\/quality-schemes-explained_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EU quality schemes<\/a> as geographical indications, have a low Nutri-score index, such as D or E. The apparent paradox is generated by the fact that these foods, derived from tradition and high-quality know-how, may be compared with more recent, ultra-transformed products that can show more favorable scores.<\/p>\n<p>Since it is very difficult for products protected by EU quality schemes to intervene on their Nutri-score because of the requirements established by the rigorous specifications of their category, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senat.fr\/basile\/visio.do?id=qSEQ210422090&amp;idtable=q395125%7Cq401277%7Cq401221&amp;_c=22090&amp;rch=gs&amp;de=20201109&amp;au=20211109&amp;dp=1+%E2%80%A6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the request to the institutions<\/a> would be to adapt the Nutri-score calculation algorithm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The answers of the French institutions are clear and substantiated. <\/strong>First of all, they note that the Nutri-score and the EU quality schemes refer to two completely different fields: nutritional quality on the one hand, and quality linked to the know-how of tradition, connected to production, taste and territory, on the other. Besides, the calculation of the Nutri-score has already been adapted for cheese, in order to take into account its Calcium content. Moreover, a low Nutri-score should not be understood as discouraging the consumption of products, but rather as an invitation to an responsible intake.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities also ensure that <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>Nutri-score is not an immutable tool<\/strong> and that its algorithm is susceptible to modification. In particular, the seven nations that use it have established a governance system that includes an independent scientific committee, set up to evaluate adjustment proposals.
