class=\"lRu31\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In accordance with Article 31 of Regulation (EC) No 178\/2002, the European Commission asked EFSA to assess whether the data from two new scientific publications presented by the Italian society of toxicology were sufficient to revise their conclusions<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">on the <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2018.5090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safety of hydroxyanthracene derivatives in foods<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">These 2 new scientific publications concern two <em>in vivo<\/em> comet tests in mice conducted respectively on <strong>Aloe\u2010emodin<\/strong> and the <strong>whole dried juice of <em>Aloe ferox<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The results of the study with aloe-emodin were considered inconclusive for the induction of DNA strand breaks with the standard comet assay protocol.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Results obtained with the modified comet assay protocol with a lesion-specific enzyme (hOGG1) suggest that aloe\u2010emodin can induce oxidative DNA damage in colon cells <em>in vivo<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"lRu31\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The absence of DNA damage observed in the <em>Aloe ferox<\/em> juice study was considered of little relevance with respect to the genotoxicity of hydroxyanthracene derivatives, due to the low concentrations of hydroxyanthracene derivatives and<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">the potential antagonistic effect of other components present in the juice (for example, antioxidants).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Thus, the two studies by Galli et al.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">(2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0273230021001070?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2214750021001505?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">b<\/a>) <strong>do not justify a revision of the conclusions of the EFSA ANS Panel on the safety of hydroxyanthracene derivatives for food use.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To know more, you can ferox<\/em><\/a>,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">and <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2018.5090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EFSA opinion on the safety of hydroxyanthracene derivatives in foods
