{"id":9225,"date":"2023-09-07T16:11:28","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T15:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/?p=9225"},"modified":"2023-09-08T17:07:38","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T16:07:38","slug":"la-choline-contribue-a-la-fonction-hepatique-normale-du-foetus-et-des-nourrissons-exclusivement-allaites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/en\/2023\/09\/07\/la-choline-contribue-a-la-fonction-hepatique-normale-du-foetus-et-des-nourrissons-exclusivement-allaites\/","title":{"rendered":"Choline contributes to normal liver function in the fetus and exclusively breastfed infants"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"l-subsection\"><div class=\"l-subsection-h\"><div class=\"l-subsection-hh g-html i-cf\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">On June 22, 2023, the European Authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion recognizing the contribution of choline to the normal hepatic function of the fetus and exclusively breastfed infants.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">She recognized the scientific basis of this effect on health following the request for a health claim on this subject.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Applicant<\/strong>:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The company Procter &amp; Gamble BV sent a dossier through Belgium to request authorization of a health claim relating to choline and the contribution to normal liver function of the fetus and exclusively breastfed infant.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Type of health claim:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The request concerns a health claim relating to the health and development of children (Article 14.1.b) according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=CELEX:32006R1924&amp;qid=1694189131171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Regulation on nutritional and health claims<\/a>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Justification provided:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The dossier is based on the essentiality of this nutrient.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> Choline can be synthesized de novo by the human body but depletion-repletion studies in humans show that low choline intake leads to liver dysfunction and muscle damage, which is reversed by administration of dietary choline.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">During pregnancy, the body&#8217;s need for choline is increased by approximately 20%, and most pregnant women need more choline than they consume in their daily diet.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In 2016, EFSA published a scientific opinion on the dietary reference value (DRV) of choline.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">DRVs have been proposed for all population groups including pregnant and lactating women as emerging evidence in humans has shown that endogenous choline synthesis may be insufficient to cover physiological needs (EFSA NDA Panel<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens), 2016. Dietary Reference Values for choline.
