{"id":9887,"date":"2026-01-05T14:21:26","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T13:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/?p=9887"},"modified":"2026-01-15T17:15:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:15:27","slug":"la-consommation-de-kiwis-augmente-lapport-en-vitamine-c-de-la-peau-et-soutient-la-structure-cutanee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/en\/2026\/01\/05\/la-consommation-de-kiwis-augmente-lapport-en-vitamine-c-de-la-peau-et-soutient-la-structure-cutanee\/","title":{"rendered":"Sungold kiwifruit intake boosts vitamin C in skin and supports dermal structure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"l-subsection\"><div class=\"l-subsection-h\"><div class=\"l-subsection-hh g-html i-cf\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/science-nutrition.com\/en\/2025\/09\/02\/le-kiwi-vert-est-le-premier-fruit-beneficiant-dune-allegation-de-sante-accordee-par-lefsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green kiwi was the first fruit to receive a health claim in EU<\/a>, the sungold kiwifruit has recently been associated with<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> a health effect, specifically on the skin.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Indeed, by directly measuring vitamin C in human skin, researchers have demonstrated that diet can increase the skin&#8217;s vitamin C content and influence its structure, while also revealing the limits of its effects on collagen formation and UV protection.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In this new study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, researchers directly examine how different skin compartments react to dietary ascorbate and whether these changes translate into measurable improvements in skin function.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The researchers also conducted a pilot dietary intervention based on kiwifruit, providing approximately 250 mg\/day of vitamin C, to test whether increasing plasma ascorbate levels raises the skin&#8217;s ascorbate content and alters skin function.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Through measurements of DNA content at the cellular level, researchers found that:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"X4DQ0 zWsGpc\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"vLsFwd lyY31c\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The epidermis contained 11 times more DNA than the dermis, allowing for the estimation of cellular concentrations.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"vLsFwd lyY31c\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Dermal fibroblasts contained approximately 6.4 mM of ascorbate, while epidermal keratinocytes contained approximately 0.9 mM, a difference of sevenfold.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"vLsFwd lyY31c\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The high concentrations of dermal ascorbate are similar to those observed in adrenal and brain tissues, where ascorbate acts as an enzymatic cofactor, likely promoting significant collagen synthesis in fibroblasts.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"vLsFwd lyY31c\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Ascorbate concentrations in whole skin, the dermis, and the epidermis increased proportionally to blood ascorbate levels.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In the kiwi supplementation group, participants with lower than average baseline concentrations reached plasma saturation (&gt;
