To minimise the polluting impact of plastics, the Earth Day Network encourages:
- Promoting widespread public awareness on the damage caused by plastics to all biodiversity and demanding further research on its implications.
- Phasing out all single-use plastics by 2030 and meeting this phase-out commitment in the UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution by 2024.
- Demanding policies that put an end to fast fashion and the vast amount of plastic it uses.
- Investing in innovative technologies and materials to build a plastic-free world.
Like the Environment Day on 5 June, the International Biodiversity Day on 22 May or the World Health Day on 7 April, the World Earth Day —also called Mother Earth Day— has a huge symbolic component, with marches, rallies and volunteer events, and much more about the topics of the health, the sustainability and the respect of the environment. On 22 April, thousands of actions with a real impact on our environment are scheduled: Climate action for the respect and care of natural resources such as water or forests, as well as for the reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming and climate change.
There are as many options as there are people, organisations and contexts to help restore the Earth as political leaders decide to take decisive action to reduce carbon emissions globally. Here are five ideas highlighted this year by the Earth Day Network for inspiration:
- Raising climate literacy and awareness,
- Reducing plastic consumption,
- Tree planting,
- Contributing to the global cleanup,
- Consuming sustainable fashion.

World Earth Day 2024 “Planet vs Plastics”: 22 April
The 54th World Earth Day 2024, celebrated this Monday 22 April, is under the slogan “Planet vs. Plastics”. Earth Day was born in the United States in 1970 as a result of social, activist and student movements. This event recalls the call of hundreds of thousands of people to consolidate a global alliance to act, innovate and implement measures to protect the environment among all: companies, governments and citizens.
This Monday 22 April 2024 marks the 54rd edition of the Earth Day, a day to highlight the importance of our planet and the conservation of its ecosystems on all continents and oceans. This celebration mobilises a billion people every year and is backed by a huge international environmental and social movement. The Earth Day Network recalls that currently 380 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, while only 9% of the plastic produced so far has been recycled. Under the slogan “Planet vs. Plastics”, the organisation calls for a 60 % reduction in the use of this material by 2040 to help combat climate change.
