ANSES (National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) and Public Health France are launching the Albane study, which is a national survey that will track the health status of a representative sample of the French population over several years.
Why the Albane survey?
Its goal is to better understand the health status of the French population in order to help public authorities orient health and prevention policies. More specifically, it will allow:
1) to know the frequency of chronic diseases such as diabetes, respiratory diseases, allergies, and hypertension,
2) to inform about exposure to pesticides, bisphenols, phthalates, or perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS),
3) to describe the dietary habits and level of physical activity of the population.
It follows the two previous national studies INCA3 (from 2014 to 2015) on diet and ESTEBAN (from 2014 to 2016) on the environment, bio surveillance, physical activity, and nutrition, and will provide a current photograph of health, exposure to chemical substances, dietary habits, and physical activity of the French population.
Who is participating?
The Albane survey concerns the entire French population residing in mainland France and Corsica aged 0 to 79 years. The sample of more than 3,000 people will be selected from a database of INSEE to be representative of the national population. Every 2 years, the survey will be repeated with new distinct samples to provide a comprehensive and continuous view of the health status of the population.
What are the main steps of the Albane survey?
- Collection of participation agreement:
An Ipsos investigator will go to the homes of selected individuals to present the study, answer questions, and profession/occupation, and diet. They will provide them with materials and give instructions for following the survey.
- Collection of dietary data and health examination:
The participant then fills out online (or paper) questionnaires about their lifestyle, health status, eating habits, and physical activity. Some volunteers may be asked to wear an accelerometer for 7 days to measure physical activity. To know their food consumption, the participant will describe their food and beverage intake over 24 hours for 3 randomly selected days.
The participant will also go to a testing laboratory for a health examination. A nurse will take measurements of height, weight, muscle strength, and blood pressure for subjects aged 12 and older. She will ask the participant about their chronic diseases, tobacco use, and exposure to chemical substances. Urine samples and a small lock of hair will be collected in order to perform the necessary analyses. For subjects aged 6 and older, blood tests will also be conducted.
- Reception of Data
The volunteer will receive their biological data as well as a summary of their food consumption.
When will the Albane data be available?
The first results outside of bio surveillance from the first cycle of Albane planned for 2025 will be available starting in 2027.
