The French-speaking Group of Pediatric Hepatology-Gastroenterology and Nutrition (GFHGNP) publishes its recommendations for infants, children and adolescents on a vegan diet. GFHGNP first considers that the vegan diet is unsuitable and not recommended for infant populations because of the serious deficiencies it can cause. These restrictive diets can have serious consequences, especially when this diet is introduced at an early age, a period of significant growth and neurological development. Even if deficiencies have less impact on older children and adolescents, they are not uncommon and should therefore also be avoided. Regular food monitoring is essential, supplementation with vitamin B12 and vitamin D is still necessary, while iron, calcium, docosahexaenoic acid and zinc must be supplemented on a case-by-case basis.
