The EFSA Panel has concluded that an intake of 8 mg of astaxanthin (ATX) per day from food supplements is safe for adults, even in combination with the high exposure estimate to ATX from the background diet. Adolescents from 14 to < 18 years of age reach the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) in a combined exposure scenario when 8 mg of ATX from dietary supplements are consumed in combination with estimates of high background dietary intake. In such a scenario of combined ingestion of 8 mg ATX from dietary supplements and high exposure estimates from the background diet, the ADI is exceeded in children below 14 years of age.
