At the dawn of the Olympic games 2024, it is important for athletes to know that the application of the European standard NF EN 1744 protects them by limiting doping agents in food supplements for athletes.

Athletes may consume food supplements claiming the increase of strength, physical performance and endurance and may be exposed to doping agents through food supplements of bad quality.

Thus, a group of 18 European countries has mobilized, at the initiative of France, to propose a framework of good practices to limit the risks of the presence of doping substances in foods and food supplements intended for sportsmen and athletes.

To deal with the risks associated with products fraudulently presented as sports foods or food supplements, the European consumers and manufacturers concerned can now rely on the European standard NF EN 17444. This European standard has its origins in a French standard (NF V94-001), published in 2012, initiated by the Ministry of Sport and French manufacturers of sports products for more than ten years, with the support and scientific expertise of ANSES.

What is the French and European standard NF EN 1744?

This document sets out the requirements for the development and manufacture of athlete foods and food supplements, with the objectives to limiting the risk of the presence of substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), but it does not guarantee their complete absence. It specifies a framework of good practices whose purpose is to prevent the presence of substances prohibited in sport, in foodstuffs intended for sport. The anti-doping standard NF EN 17444 came into force throughout the European zone on 10 June 2021.

How to recognize the athlete food supplements compliant with the standard NF EN 1744?

Manufacturers who have chosen to comply with the standard will be able to affix the following statement: “This product has been developed and manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the NF EN 17444 standard on the date of production of the batch.” A statement that offers consumers and athletes the safety of choosing products without prohibited substances.
