The EFSA’s Scientific Committee has assessed the exposure to copper from all dietary and non-dietary sources for the first time for this substance. He has concluded that the combined exposure to copper from all sources does not pose health concerns for the EU population. No copper retention is expected to occur with an intake of up to 5 mg per day and the Committee has established an acceptable daily intake (safe level) of 0.07 milligrams per kilogram of body weight for the adult population.

Copper is an essential micro nutrient for all living beings including humans. It is present in many foods and is used in organic and conventional pesticides, feed and food additives as well as a nutrient in fortified foods and food supplements. In addition,  use of copper utensils and copper pipes are significant contributors to intake when the contribution of pesticides, food and feed additives or fertilisers is negligible.  Excessive copper retention in the body could be toxic for humans over time, especially  for liver.

To be highlighted that the tolerable upper intake level (UL) of vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin D, vitamin E, beta-carotene, iron, manganese, folate and selenium are being reviewed and scheduled for completion in 2023.
