Climate change may cause nutritional deficiencies
Due to global warming, atmospheric CO2 concentrations are rising. Many food crops grown under 550 ppm of CO2 have protein, iron and zinc contents reduced by 3–17% compared with current levels. In an article published in Nature Climate Change, American researchers analyzed the impact of elevated CO2 concentrations on the sufficiency of dietary intakes of iron, zinc and protein for the populations of 151 countries. Their estimations showed that elevated CO2 could cause in 2050 additional nutritional deficiencies in zinc, proteins, and iron. Geographical areas at highest risk are South and Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
