EFSA declared the safety of dried yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor larva) as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The EFSA Panel concluded that Tenebrio molitor larva Novel Food (NF) is safe according to the proposed uses and levels of use. In addition, the Scientific Panel notes that allergic reactions are likely to occur. The scientific group could not have reached a conclusion on the safety of NF under the proposed conditions of use without the data claimed as proprietary by the applicant (analyzes of contaminants in the NF, detailed description of the drying process, data (analytical data on chitin levels, and data on the oxidative and microbiological status of NF during storage).
The Panel recommends that research be undertaken on allergenicity to yellow mealworms, including cross-reactivity with other allergens.
