EFSA public consultation on dietary sugars

Florence DEVILLERS

EFSA has launched an open consultation on its draft protocol for the scientific opinion on the tolerable upper intake level of dietary sugars from 9 January to 4 March 2018. EFSA received comments from 46 interested parties (academic research and industries). The comments received and how there were addressed by EFSA are summarized here.

The protocol is designed to provide scientific advice on an tolerable upper intake level for main types of sugars, i.e. the maximum level of total chronic daily intake of sugars (from all sources) judged to be unlikely to pose a risk of adverse health effects to humans (metabolic diseases and dental caries).

You can find the final version of the protocol endorsed by the EFSA Panel here.

Another public consultation will be organised on the draft scientific opinion, which is foreseen to be endorsed by the NDA Panel at the end of 2019.
