A UK global review about the use of commercial food purchase datas around the world

A UK global analysis by the Nuffield Department of Population Health of Oxford University was conducted on food sales or purchasing data studies to analyze trends in food purchasing or in nutritional compositions of food aroud the world.

The selected studies used data on sales or purchases from four databases: Euromonitor, GfK, Kantar and Nielsen. Sales and purchasing data were used to evaluate interventions, such as the impact of the saturated fat tax in Denmark, the taxes on soft drinks and junk food products in Mexico, and nutrition programs in the United States. They also identified trends in nutritional compositions of foods and patterns of consumer buying over time.

Food sales and purchase data are a valuable tool for public health nutrition researchers and their use has increased markedly in the last four years, despite the cost of access, the lack of transparency on data-collection methods and restrictions on publication. The availability of product and brand-level sales data means they are particularly useful for assessing how changes by individual food companies can impact on diet and public health.
