A public consultation on possible revisions of the “Food Information to Consumers” Regulation is now open

The consultation has been open on December 13 and is accessible up to the beginning of March 2022. Within the framework of the Farm to Fork Strategy, the European Commission has identified a few aspects of the “Food Information to Consumers” (FIC) Regulation – Reg (EU) 1169/2011 – whose modification or redefinition could benefit the quality of information to consumers, favoring healthy and sustainable choices.

 

In particular, the issues that were identified and that could potentially be concerned by a revision are:

  • The identification of a harmonized standard for front-of-pack nutrition labelling (read our news on the EFSA Opinion on its creation),
  • The rules on the mandatory indication of the geographical origin of certain ingredients or foods,
  • The concepts related to the meaning and expression of the date of minimum durability and the “use by” date.

Following an Inception Impact Assessment published by the European Commission on December 23, 2020, that underwent a feedback period that ended on February 4, 2021 and collected 472 comments, a public consultation period opened on December 13, 2021.

The consultation, that already counts 132 contributions, is open to all citizens and stakeholders from the European Union and third countries until March 7, 2022; the final adoption of a regulatory text by the Commission is expected for the last quarter of the same year.
