On Tuesday March 22, a webinar was hosted by Mr. B. Srour from INRAE. Dr. M. Thouvier (Research Director at INSERM) intervened to provide an update on the Nutri-score, its understanding and its link with health.
Orchidali underlines certain points of this presentation:
- The Nutri-score is a tool that is not mandatory by regulation but used in France in 2021 by more than 600 companies, i.e. 700 brands, around 50% of the food market.
- 6 other European countries recommend it with France (Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland).
- It is a candidate to become a reference tool recommended by European regulations. The decision is expected in 2022.
- The Nutri-score calculation algorithm may change depending on knowledge. It could take into account the ultra-processed aspect of a food product. As current knowledge does not make it possible to correctly assess the share of processing on the nutritional quality of food products, an overall score cannot be calculated, but this aspect could be taken into account in the future by additional descriptive information in the current logo.
- The Nutri-score has been the subject of numerous publications and its understanding has been tested, including among the most disadvantaged populations, where its role in facilitating an adequate choice has been tested.
- The Nutri-score is calculated in 100 g. and it is not envisaged to calculate it per serving.
