The prominent pedologist, Dr. Rattan Lal, professor emeritus of soil science and founding director of the Carbon Management & Sequestration Center at Ohio State University (OSU), becomes this year’s winner of the World Food Prize 2020 (World Food Prize 2020) for his work on soil promotion and sustainable development. In particular, he worked on the development and integration of a soil-centered approach to increase food production that conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change. His ground-based approach is based on the premise that “the health of the soil, plants, animals, people and the environment is one and indivisible”.
As soils also provide essential environmental services such as rainwater retention, filtration of pollutants and provision of habitat for all kinds of organisms, it is all the more important for societies to manage soils in a sustainable way.
