The European Commission launched on September 22, 2020 an initiative to improve sustainability in the cocoa sector. It brings together representatives of Ivory Coast and Ghana as well as representatives of the European Parliament, EU Member States, cocoa producers and civil society. Its aim is to formulate concrete recommendations for advancing sustainability throughout the cocoa supply chain through collective action and partnerships. Thematic groups have been set up and will meet between October 2020 and July 2021 to:

  • discuss ways to encourage responsible practices by EU companies involved in cocoa supply chains,
  • feed into other relevant ongoing Commission initiatives,
  • feed into political discussions between the EU and the cocoa producing countries concerned: Ivory Coast and Ghana,
  • guide the European Commission in the design and deployment of projects to support sustainable cocoa production.

A plenary session is scheduled for autumn 2021 to take stock of the progress made. A public report will present the recommendations and further action to be taken.
